On an iPhone or iPad, you can change the daily goal from the Reading Now tab. On a Mac, change it from Home.

Apple does not document whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. Test the imported story instead of assuming it will count.

Check whether an imported EPUB counts

After adding the story to your Library:

Check today’s reading time in Apple Books.
Open the imported EPUB.
Read for a minute or two.
Return to Reading Goals and see whether today’s total increased.

If the total rises, Apple Books is counting time spent reading that EPUB on your device. If it stays the same, that reading session may not count toward the daily goal.

Make PDFs count toward your reading goal

PDFs count toward the Apple Books reading goal only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, select Apps, choose Books, and turn on Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, choose Books, and find the same option.

Once the setting is on, read the imported PDF for a minute or two and check whether the day’s reading time has increased.
