Track Nine Lives Archive Reading in Apple Books

Apple Books can open a Nine Lives Archive story downloaded as an EPUB or PDF. Add the story to Apple Books

On iPhone or iPad

1. Open the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
2. Find the downloaded EPUB or PDF.
3. Open the Share menu.
4. Choose Books.

Apple Books will open the file and add it to your Library.

On Mac

Open the Books app and drag the EPUB into it. You can also choose File, then Add to Library, and select the downloaded file. The imported story will appear in your Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Reading Goals track how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year. The default daily goal is five minutes.

On an iPhone or iPad, change the daily goal from the Reading Now tab. On a Mac, adjust it from Home.

Apple’s documentation does not say whether EPUB files imported from outside Apple Books count toward daily reading time. The easiest way to check is to test the imported story on your device.

Check whether your imported EPUB counts

1. Open Apple Books and note today’s reading time.
2. Open the Nine Lives Archive EPUB from your Library.
3. Read for a minute or two.
4. Return to Reading Now on iPhone or iPad, or Home on Mac.
5. Check whether today’s reading time increased.

If the total increases, Apple Books is counting the imported EPUB on your device. If it does not, that does not mean the file is broken. Apple does not document a consistent rule for imported EPUBs.

Make a PDF count toward Reading Goals

PDFs count toward the reading goal only when Include PDFs is enabled.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, choose Apps, then Books, and turn on Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, choose Books, and enable the same option.

Once the setting is on, open the imported PDF in Apple Books and read it there. To confirm that the time is being tracked, note today’s reading time, read for a minute or two, and check the total again.
