Put a Sam & Jack Story on a Kindle with calibre and USB
You can put a Sam & Jack story on a Kindle without using Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Download the complete story as an EPUB with WP Downloader, add it to calibre, convert it to AZW3, and transfer it to your Kindle over USB. The process works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
What you need
Have these ready:
- The Sam & Jack story page
- A computer with calibre installed
- Your Kindle and its USB cable
- The EPUB downloaded from WP Downloader
WP Downloader is a free web tool, so there is nothing to install. calibre is a free e-book manager that can convert the EPUB and transfer it over USB.
1. Copy the Sam & Jack story link
Open the story on samandjack.net and copy its URL from your browser. A story address looks like this:
https://samandjack.net/fanfics/viewstory.php?sid=1234 Copy the main story page. WP Downloader downloads complete Sam & Jack stories, not individual chapters or lists.
2. Download the story with WP Downloader
Open the Sam & Jack downloader and paste the story link into the box. WP Downloader detects the site and prepares the complete story.
Choose EPUB as the output format. EPUB is free for everyone and can be added to calibre. To keep the story’s illustrations, turn on the option to include images before downloading.
You do not need to sign in for public Sam & Jack stories. For a members-only story, you can sign in with your account from that site. WP Downloader can only retrieve content that your account is already allowed to read. It cannot bypass locked content, paywalls, or age restrictions, and it uses your credentials only to fetch the requested story.
Support for Sam & Jack was ported from the open-source fanfiction downloader FanFicFare.
Save the EPUB somewhere you can find it, such as your downloads folder. See how to download Sam & Jack stories for more help with this step.
3. Add the EPUB to calibre
Open calibre and select Add books. Find the downloaded EPUB and add it to your library.
Select the story in calibre’s book list to check its title, author, and cover. You can edit this metadata before transferring the book to your Kindle.
You can also check the file by opening it in calibre’s e-book viewer. The viewer has a Read aloud feature if you want to listen on your computer.
4. Convert the EPUB to AZW3
WP Downloader does not create MOBI or AZW3 files, so you need calibre for the conversion.
Select the story in calibre and choose Convert books. Set the output format to AZW3, then start the conversion. AZW3 is a Kindle format that you can copy to an e-reader over USB.
calibre can also convert EPUB files to MOBI or PDF. This guide uses AZW3 for the Kindle USB transfer.
5. Connect the Kindle and transfer the story
Connect your Kindle to the computer with its USB cable and wait for calibre to recognize it.
Select the converted story in your calibre library, then choose Send to device. After calibre finishes transferring the book, safely disconnect the Kindle. The story should appear in its library.
This process does not use Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Kindle e-readers can still open MOBI and AZW3 files copied over USB. Only the Send to Kindle service stopped accepting MOBI files.
For a wireless transfer, follow the guide to send Sam & Jack stories to Kindle.
Downloading updated chapters later
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an EPUB already in your calibre library. If the author publishes more chapters, download the complete story again.
Add the new EPUB to calibre, convert it to AZW3, and transfer it to your Kindle. The new download contains the whole story, so check calibre and your Kindle for duplicate copies.
