KOReader is a free, open-source document reader that opens EPUB and PDF files. EPUB is the simplest choice because WP Downloader provides it to everyone without requiring a sign-in.
Step 1: Copy the Ad Astra story link
Open the story on adastrafanfic.com and copy its address from your browser. An Ad Astra story URL looks like this:

Android
Use your usual Android file-transfer method to move the EPUB to your phone or tablet. Save it in a folder you can find from KOReader.
Kindle
KOReader runs only on jailbroken Kindles. Installing it is a separate, unofficial process. If KOReader is already installed, copy the EPUB to your Kindle as you normally transfer files.

Step 4: Open the story in KOReader
Open KOReader, find the EPUB in its file browser, and select the file. Because the story is stored on your device, you can read it without returning to Ad Astra or WP Downloader.

Getting newly published chapters
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an EPUB you already have. When the author updates the story, return to the Ad Astra downloader, paste the link again, and download a new copy.
Copy the new EPUB to your device and open it in KOReader. You can keep or remove the older file.
