How to Read a MediaMiner Story on a Kobo
Download the MediaMiner story as an EPUB with WP Downloader, then transfer the file to your Kobo. Kobo e-readers open EPUB files directly, so you will not need to convert the book or install another reading app.
Download the MediaMiner story as an EPUB
WP Downloader is a free web tool with nothing to install. Its MediaMiner support was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.
Find the story on mediaminer.org. Its address should look similar to this:
https://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/s/category-name/story-title/123456 Copy the complete story URL, then:
- Open the MediaMiner downloader.
- Paste the story URL into the box.
- Wait while WP Downloader detects MediaMiner and prepares the story.
- Choose EPUB as the output format.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download the finished EPUB to your computer.
EPUB downloads are free for everyone, and Kobo e-readers can open them directly. WP Downloader can also create a PDF after a free Discord sign-in, but this guide uses EPUB.
You do not need a MediaMiner account. WP Downloader downloads the whole story, not an individual chapter or a list of stories. If the author posts another chapter, download the story again to create a new EPUB with the latest available version. WP Downloader cannot add chapters to an EPUB already on your device.
The MediaMiner download guide explains the download process in more detail.
Put the EPUB on your Kobo with USB
You can copy the EPUB from your computer to your Kobo over USB:
- Connect your Kobo e-reader to your computer with USB.
- Wait for the Kobo to appear as a drive on the computer.
- Find the EPUB you downloaded from WP Downloader.
- Copy the EPUB onto the Kobo drive.
- Eject the Kobo.
- Disconnect the cable and wait for the book to appear in your Kobo library.
Open the story from your library as you would any other EPUB. The complete story is stored on the Kobo, so you can read it without returning to MediaMiner.
Add the story through Dropbox
Dropbox can transfer non-protected EPUB and PDF files to certain Kobo models. It requires Kobo software version 4.18 or later and works only on:
- Kobo Forma
- Kobo Sage
- Kobo Elipsa
- Kobo Elipsa 2E
- Kobo Libra Colour
Link your Dropbox account from the e-reader, put the MediaMiner EPUB in the connected cloud folder, and sync your Kobo. The book will appear on that device.
Books added through Dropbox appear only on the Kobo where you added them. Use USB if your model is not listed above.
Add the story through Google Drive
Google Drive requires Kobo software version 4.37 or later and works on the same models:
- Kobo Forma
- Kobo Sage
- Kobo Elipsa
- Kobo Elipsa 2E
- Kobo Libra Colour
To connect Google Drive on a compatible Kobo:
- From the Kobo Home screen, select More.
- Select My Google Drive.
- Select Get Started.
- Enter the displayed code on the Kobo website.
- Put the downloaded EPUB in the linked Google Drive folder.
- Sync the e-reader to add the book.
A book added through Google Drive appears only on that device.
Which transfer method should you use?
Use USB if the EPUB is on your computer or your Kobo does not support the cloud options. Your Kobo appears as a drive, and you copy the file directly onto it.
Dropbox and Google Drive are available if you have one of the supported Kobo models and the required software version. All three methods use the EPUB created by WP Downloader.
For other devices, see the guide to reading MediaMiner stories offline. A separate guide explains how to send MediaMiner stories to Kindle.
