How to Read Royal Road Stories Offline

Royal Road fictions are made for binge reading: hundreds of chapters, long arcs, regular updates. Reading them chapter-by-chapter in a browser needs a connection the whole time. Saving the fiction as a book file lets you read it anywhere - on a plane, underground, or somewhere with no signal - with your own fonts, a proper table of contents and your place remembered.

Download the fiction once

1. Copy the fiction’s URL from Royal Road (a chapter link works too).
2. Open the Royal Road Downloader and paste it.
3. Choose EPUB (free, no sign-in) or PDF (free Discord sign-in).
4. Click Download and save the file.

EPUB or PDF for web serials?

EPUB is the better choice for almost every Royal Road fiction. Web serials are text-heavy and very long, and EPUB reflows the text to your screen, lets you change font size and spacing, and keeps a chapter-by-chapter table of contents you can jump around in. It’s also the smaller file.

Choose PDF if you want a fixed layout - for printing, or for reading on a laptop or large tablet exactly as the page was generated.

Opening the file on your device

Android

Open the EPUB in an app such as ReadEra, Moon+ Reader or Google Play Books (upload it under Library → Upload files).

iPhone and iPad

Tap the downloaded file in the Files app and choose Books. Apple Books keeps your place and syncs it across your devices.

Kindle

Use Amazon’s Send to Kindle service - see How to Send Royal Road Stories to Kindle.

Kobo and other e-readers

Connect the e-reader to your computer by USB and copy the EPUB onto it, or add it through Calibre.

Computer

Open the EPUB with Calibre or Thorium Reader, or the PDF with any PDF viewer.

Keeping up with ongoing fictions

Most Royal Road fictions are still updating. When new chapters come out, download the fiction again: every download includes all chapters published so far. Your reading app will treat it as a new copy, so jump to the chapter you were on using the table of contents.

Tips

• Author’s notes are included, at the start and end of each chapter, just as on the site.
• Include Images adds maps, status screens and illustrations; leave it off for a smaller, faster download.
• Removed chapters can’t be downloaded. If an author has stubbed chapters (often when publishing on Amazon), only what’s still public on Royal Road ends up in the file.
