How to Back Up AlternateHistory.com Stories

Authors and websites can edit, unpublish, or delete stories. WP Downloader lets you save a personal EPUB or PDF copy of an AlternateHistory.com story for offline reading. The downloaded book is a snapshot of the story at the time of the download.

Download the story with WP Downloader

WP Downloader is a free web tool, and you do not need to install anything. It collects the threadmarked chapters from an AlternateHistory.com story thread and puts them into one book.

1. Copy the story thread URL

Open the story on alternatehistory.com and copy its address. It should look like this:

Copy the story thread address, not the address of an individual post.

2. Paste the link into WP Downloader

Open the AlternateHistory.com downloader, paste the thread URL into the box, and start the download.

You can also paste the link into the box on the WP Downloader home page. WPD will detect which supported site the link belongs to.

WP Downloader saves the whole AlternateHistory.com story. It does not download individual chapters or lists from this site. The tool uses the threadmarks to find and collect the story’s chapters.

3. Sign in if the story requires an account

Signing in is optional. Use your AlternateHistory.com account if you want to download a members-only story that the account can already read.

WP Downloader uses your credentials only to fetch the story you requested. It cannot bypass account requirements, paywalls, locked content, or age restrictions.

4. Choose EPUB or PDF

EPUB is free for everyone. You can open it in an e-book reading app or add it to calibre.

PDF requires a free Discord sign-in. You can also choose whether to include the story’s images in the downloaded book.

WP Downloader does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files. To get another e-book format, download the EPUB and convert it with calibre.

Keep more than one copy

Save the original file somewhere you can easily find it. A clear filename can help you tell different downloads of the same story apart.

You can keep a second copy in another folder or on another device. For example, leave the original on your computer and copy it to the phone, tablet, or e-reader you use for reading.

Keep downloaded stories for your own reading. Do not re-upload or share them.

Add the story to your phone or tablet

Download the EPUB, find it in your device’s downloads or files area, and open it with an app that supports EPUB books.

Keep the original file after adding the book to your reading app. This leaves you with another copy if the app’s library is later removed or reorganized.

If you download a PDF, open it with a PDF reader on your device.

Organize the book with calibre

calibre is a free e-book manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can use it to keep downloaded stories in one library.

To add a story:

1. Open calibre.
2. Select “Add books.”
3. Choose the EPUB you downloaded from WP Downloader.
4. Check the title, author, cover, and other metadata.
5. Keep another copy of your calibre library or the original EPUB.

calibre can edit metadata and covers. Its e-book viewer can open EPUB files and has a Read aloud feature. The program can also convert EPUB files to formats such as AZW3, MOBI, or PDF.

Move the story to an e-reader

If your e-reader connects to your computer over USB, add the EPUB to calibre, connect the device, and use calibre to send the book to it.

Keep the EPUB on your computer after transferring it. You can read the copy on your e-reader while keeping the computer copy as a backup.

Download again when new chapters appear

An EPUB or PDF from WP Downloader is a snapshot of the thread. It does not change when the author adds a chapter or edits an existing one.

WP Downloader cannot update an existing EPUB. Download the story again to get later chapters, then save the new file separately. You can keep both files if you want the earlier snapshot as well as the newer copy.
