How to Back Up MediaMiner Stories
You can keep a personal copy of a MediaMiner story by downloading it as an EPUB with WP Downloader. The file is a snapshot of the story that you can keep for private reading if the author later edits, unpublishes, or deletes it.
Download a MediaMiner story with WP Downloader
WP Downloader is a free web tool, and there is nothing to install. You do not need a MediaMiner account.
Find the story on mediaminer.org and copy its URL. A story link looks like this:
https://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/s/category-name/story-title/123456 Then:
- Open the MediaMiner downloader.
- Paste the full story URL into the box.
- Wait for WP Downloader to detect and process the story.
- Choose EPUB. This format is free for everyone.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download the finished file to your device.
PDF is also available after a free Discord sign-in. WP Downloader does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files.
MediaMiner downloads contain the whole story. You cannot download a single chapter or a list of stories from this site. For a fuller walkthrough, see how to download MediaMiner stories.
MediaMiner support was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader licensed under Apache-2.0.
Your download is a snapshot
The EPUB contains the story as it appeared when you downloaded it. It does not change automatically when the author edits a chapter or publishes a new one.
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an existing EPUB. To save later chapters or revisions, paste the story link into WP Downloader again and download a new copy. You can replace the older file or keep both versions.
Adding the download date to each filename can make different versions easier to identify. Use any naming system that helps you recognize the story and see which copy is newer.
Keep the EPUB on your phone or tablet
After downloading the EPUB, find it in your device’s downloads or files area and open it with an EPUB reader. Keep the original file somewhere you can find it again.
If you import the book into a reading app, you may also want to keep a separate copy of the original EPUB. Removing a book from the app could otherwise leave you without a backup.
You can organize saved stories in folders by archive, author, or any other system that works for you. A single MediaMiner folder may be enough for a small collection.
Organize your backups with calibre
Calibre is a free e-book manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can help you manage a larger personal library.
To add a MediaMiner story:
- Download the EPUB from WP Downloader.
- Open calibre on your computer.
- Select Add books.
- Choose the downloaded EPUB.
- Check the title, author, cover, and other metadata.
Calibre stores the book in its library and lets you edit its metadata and cover. You can also open it in the e-book viewer, which includes a Read aloud feature.
If your device needs another file type, calibre can convert the EPUB to formats such as AZW3, MOBI, or PDF.
Copy the story to an e-reader
Connect an e-reader to your computer over USB, then use calibre to send books from its library to the device.
Kindle owners can follow the guide to send MediaMiner stories to Kindle. Kobo readers can use the guide to read MediaMiner stories on Kobo.
Keep the original EPUB after converting it. The converted file is a version prepared for a particular device, while the EPUB remains the original file from WP Downloader.
Make your backup easy to find
Store your MediaMiner EPUBs in a clearly named folder or a calibre library. If you keep several versions of a story, give them filenames that make each version easy to identify.
Download the story again when it gains new chapters or receives edits you want to keep. WP Downloader can only save the version available when you make the request.
Keep downloaded copies for your own reading. Do not re-upload or share them.
