How to Back Up Walking the Plank Stories
Authors and archive sites can edit, unpublish, or delete stories. To keep a personal copy of a Walking the Plank story, download it with WP Downloader and save the resulting EPUB or PDF. An EPUB preserves the version that was available when you downloaded it.
Download the Walking the Plank story
WP Downloader is a free web tool with nothing to install. You can download complete stories from Walking the Plank, also known as walkingtheplank.org, without signing in.
A Walking the Plank story address looks like this:
http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=1234 To download a story:
- Open the story on Walking the Plank.
- Copy its full address from your browser.
- Go to the Walking the Plank downloader.
- Paste the address into the box.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download an EPUB, or sign in with a free Discord account to choose PDF.
EPUB is free for everyone and works well for an e-book library managed with calibre.
WP Downloader downloads the whole story from Walking the Plank. It does not download individual chapters or lists of stories. See how to download Walking the Plank stories for a separate walkthrough.
Remember that your download is a snapshot
A downloaded EPUB does not stay connected to the archive. It contains the story as it appeared when you downloaded it.
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an existing EPUB. If the author adds chapters or edits the story, paste its link into the downloader again and save a new copy.
You may want to keep the older file until you have checked the new download. Then you can keep both versions or remove the one you no longer need.
Save and organize the file
Move each downloaded story somewhere you can find it later instead of leaving it among unrelated downloads.
A simple folder structure is enough:
Books
Walking the Plank Use a filename that clearly identifies the story. When you download an updated version, give it a different filename so you can tell the copies apart.
For an additional backup, save another copy in a separate location available to you. This keeps the story from depending on a single device.
Keep downloaded copies for your own reading. Do not re-upload or share them.
Add EPUB files to calibre
calibre is a free e-book manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can use it to organize stories downloaded from Walking the Plank and other archives.
To add a story:
- Open calibre.
- Select Add books.
- Choose the EPUB you downloaded.
- Check its title, author, cover, and other metadata.
- Open the story in calibre’s e-book viewer to read it on your computer.
The viewer also has a Read aloud feature for listening to the story.
calibre can convert an EPUB to AZW3, MOBI, or PDF. WP Downloader does not create AZW3, MOBI, or TXT files, so you can use calibre when you need another format.
You can also connect an e-reader by USB and send the book to it with calibre. For device-specific help, see the Kindle instructions or Kobo instructions.
Keep your backups current
Walking the Plank EPUB files do not update automatically. If you are following an unfinished story, check its archive page for changes. Download the complete story again when new chapters appear.
Each download gives you a new snapshot. If the online story is later edited or removed, you will still have the personal copy you saved earlier.
