Do CFAArchive Stories Count Toward Apple Books Reading Goals?

Apple Books may track the time you spend reading a downloaded Comic Fanfiction Authors Archive story. PDFs count only when the Include PDFs setting is turned on. Apple does not document whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time, so you will need to check after adding the story to your library.

Download a CFAArchive story with WP Downloader

WP Downloader is a free web tool with nothing to install. It downloads a whole story from cfaarchive.org as an EPUB or PDF.

  1. Find the story on Comic Fanfiction Authors Archive.
  2. Copy its URL. It should look like this:
https://www.cfaarchive.org/works/123456
  1. Open the CFAArchive downloader.
  2. Paste the story link into the box.
  3. Choose EPUB, which is free for everyone, or PDF, which requires a free Discord sign-in.
  4. Turn on the image option if you want to include the story’s images.
  5. Download the finished file.

WP Downloader downloads whole CFAArchive stories. It does not download individual chapters or lists. If the author adds more chapters later, download the story again. WPD cannot update an existing EPUB.

Public stories do not require an account. You can optionally sign in with your cfaarchive.org account to reach members-only stories that your account can read. WP Downloader does not bypass access restrictions.

CFAArchive support was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.

Add the story to Apple Books on iPhone or iPad

After downloading the EPUB or PDF:

  1. Open the file from the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
  2. Select Share.
  3. Choose Books.

The imported story will appear in your Apple Books Library.

Add the story to Apple Books on Mac

Open the Books app and drag the downloaded EPUB into it. You can also select File, then Add to Library, and choose the file.

The imported story will appear in your Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Apple Books Reading Goals track how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year.

The daily goal is five minutes by default. You can change it from the Reading Now tab on an iPhone or iPad, or from Home on a Mac.

Whether reading a CFAArchive story contributes to the daily goal depends partly on the file format.

Make PDF reading count toward your goal

Apple Books counts PDFs toward your reading goal only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current versions of iOS:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps.
  3. Choose Books.
  4. Turn on Include PDFs.

On older versions of iOS, open Settings, choose Books, and turn on Include PDFs.

Reading time from a PDF will not count toward the goal while this setting is off.

Check whether an imported EPUB counts

Apple does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. You can check an imported CFAArchive EPUB on your device:

  1. Open Apple Books and note today’s reading time.
  2. Open the imported CFAArchive EPUB.
  3. Read for a minute or two.
  4. Return to your Reading Goals.
  5. See whether today’s reading time has increased.

If the total increases, Apple Books is counting time spent reading that imported EPUB on your device. If it remains unchanged, the reading session did not add to the displayed daily time.

You can run the same check with a PDF after confirming that Include PDFs is turned on.

Choose between EPUB and PDF

Apple Books opens EPUB and PDF files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. EPUB is free from WP Downloader. PDF requires a free Discord sign-in, and Include PDFs must be turned on for PDF reading to count toward your goal.

If tracking matters to you, test the file soon after importing it so you know whether its reading time is being counted.
