Do Kakuyomu Stories Count Toward Apple Books Reading Goals?

You can download a Kakuyomu story as an EPUB and import it into Apple Books. Apple does not document whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. To check, read the imported story for a minute or two and see whether today’s total increases.

Add the EPUB to Apple Books on iPhone or iPad

After downloading the EPUB:

  1. Open the file from the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Choose Books.

Apple Books will add the imported story to your Library, where you can open and read it with your other books.

If Books does not appear right away in the Share menu, check the other sharing options.

Add the EPUB to Apple Books on Mac

Open the Books app, then use either method:

  • Drag the downloaded EPUB into the Books app.
  • Choose File, then Add to Library, and select the EPUB.

The Kakuyomu story will appear in your Apple Books Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Apple Books tracks how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year.

The daily goal is five minutes by default. On an iPhone or iPad, you can view or change it from the Reading Now tab. On a Mac, use Home.

Apple’s documentation does not explain whether imported EPUBs count toward daily reading time, so check the result on your device.

Check whether your Kakuyomu reading counts

After importing the EPUB:

  1. Open Apple Books and note today’s reading time.
  2. Open the imported Kakuyomu story.
  3. Read for a minute or two.
  4. Return to Reading Now on an iPhone or iPad, or Home on a Mac.
  5. Check whether today’s reading time has increased.

If the total increases, Apple Books is recording time spent reading that imported EPUB on your device. If it stays the same, do not assume the reading was added to your goal.

If you downloaded a PDF

Apple Books can open PDF files, but they count toward Reading Goals only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current iOS versions, open Settings, then Apps, then Books, and turn on Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, then Books. Read the PDF and use the same short test to check the daily total.

EPUB is the usual choice for reading a Kakuyomu story as a book in Apple Books. If you choose PDF, remember to check the Include PDFs setting.
