Do Stories of Arda Stories Count Toward Apple Books Reading Goals?

Apple does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time in Apple Books. The easiest way to find out is to add a Stories of Arda story, read it for a minute or two, and check whether your reading time increases.

Add the EPUB to Apple Books

The steps differ slightly between Apple devices.

On an iPhone or iPad

After downloading the EPUB:

Open the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
Find the downloaded EPUB.
Open the Share menu.
Choose Books.

Apple Books will open and add the story to your Library.

On a Mac

Open the Books app and drag the EPUB into it. You can also choose File, then Add to Library, and select the downloaded file.

The imported story will appear in your Apple Books Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Reading Goals track:

How many minutes you read each day
How many books and audiobooks you finish each year

The default daily goal is five minutes. You can change it from the Reading Now tab on an iPhone or iPad, or from Home on a Mac.

Apple’s documentation does not say whether an EPUB you imported yourself contributes to your daily reading time. Check the result on your device rather than assuming the story will or will not count.

Check whether your Stories of Arda EPUB counts

After importing the story:

Open Apple Books and note today’s reading time.
Open the imported Stories of Arda EPUB.
Read for a minute or two.
Return to your Reading Goal.
Check whether today’s reading time has increased.

If the time increases, Apple Books is recording your reading of that EPUB. If it does not, reading the same file may not contribute to the daily goal on your device.

What if you downloaded a PDF?

Apple Books can open PDF files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. PDFs count toward the reading goal only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, Apps, then Books and turn on Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, then Books. Read the PDF briefly afterward and check whether today’s reading time increases.

EPUB works well for book-style reading. If you choose PDF, remember to turn on Include PDFs.
