Do Walking the Plank Stories Count Toward Apple Books Reading Goals?

You can add a Walking the Plank story to Apple Books after downloading it as an EPUB or PDF with WP Downloader. PDFs can count toward your Reading Goals when PDF tracking is enabled. Apple does not document whether imported EPUBs count, so you will need to check on your device.

Download the Walking the Plank story

WP Downloader is a free web tool with nothing to install. Open the Walking the Plank downloader and paste the story link into the box.

A Walking the Plank story link looks like this:

http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=1234

WP Downloader detects the site and downloads the whole story. You do not need to sign in. Downloads from Walking the Plank are limited to complete stories, so individual chapters and story lists are not available.

You can choose from these formats:

  • EPUB is free for everyone.
  • PDF requires a free Discord sign-in.
  • Either format can include the story’s images.

WP Downloader does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files. It also cannot add new chapters to an EPUB you already downloaded. If the story is updated, download it again.

For step-by-step instructions, see how to download Walking the Plank stories.

Add the story to Apple Books

Apple Books opens EPUB and PDF files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Imported stories appear in your Library.

On iPhone or iPad

After downloading the EPUB or PDF:

  1. Open the file from the Files app or Safari’s downloads.
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Choose Books.

Apple Books will open the file and add it to your Library.

On Mac

Open the Books app and drag the downloaded EPUB into it. You can also choose File, then Add to Library, and select the EPUB.

The story will appear in your Apple Books Library.

How Apple Books Reading Goals work

Reading Goals track how many minutes you read each day and how many books and audiobooks you finish each year.

The daily goal is five minutes by default. To change it, open the Reading Now tab on an iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, use Home.

A story does not affect your daily reading time simply because you added it to your Library. You need to open the file and read it.

Check whether an imported EPUB counts

Apple does not say whether EPUB files you import yourself count toward daily reading time. You can check with a short test:

  1. Note the reading time shown for today.
  2. Open the imported Walking the Plank EPUB.
  3. Read for a minute or two.
  4. Return to Reading Goals.
  5. Check whether today’s reading time has increased.

This will show whether Apple Books is counting the imported EPUB on your device. If the total does not increase, you can still keep and read the EPUB in your Library.

Make a PDF count toward your goal

PDFs count toward Reading Goals only when Include PDFs is turned on.

On current versions of iOS, open Settings, then Apps, then Books, and enable Include PDFs. On older versions, open Settings, then Books, and enable it there.

After turning on the setting, open the PDF in Apple Books and read for a minute or two. Check the day’s reading time to confirm that it increased. Apple does not provide an equivalent setting for imported EPUBs, so use the test above for that format.
