How to listen to StoryRoom stories with text-to-speech
To listen to a StoryRoom story, download it as an EPUB with WP Downloader and open the file in a reading app with text-to-speech. You can do this on a phone, tablet, Windows computer, Mac, or Linux computer.
Download the StoryRoom story
WP Downloader is a free web tool that works with storyroom.com and finestories.com. You do not need to install anything.
A StoryRoom link usually looks like this:
https://storyroom.com/s/1234/story-title To download a story:
- Open the StoryRoom downloader.
- Paste the story link into the box.
- Sign in with an account on the story site when prompted.
- Choose EPUB as the output format.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download the file.
WP Downloader downloads the whole story. It cannot download a single chapter or a story list from StoryRoom.
Your account credentials are used only to fetch the story you requested. The downloader can access only content that your account is allowed to read. It cannot bypass locked chapters, paywalls, or age restrictions.
For more help with these steps, read how to download StoryRoom stories.
Listen on an iPhone or iPad
Apple Books opens EPUB files, and the iPhone and iPad Speak Screen feature can read them aloud.
Turn on Speak Screen
- Open Settings.
- Choose Accessibility.
- Open Spoken Content.
- Turn on Speak Screen.
Open the downloaded EPUB in Apple Books. To start listening, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen.
Speak Screen uses the text-to-speech voices installed on your device, so the narration depends on the voices available.
Listen on Android
Android offers several ways to listen to a downloaded StoryRoom EPUB.
Use Select to Speak
Turn on Select to Speak in Settings under Accessibility. Open the story, then tap the items on the screen that you want Android to read aloud.
Use Moon+ Reader
Moon+ Reader opens EPUB files and has a built-in text-to-speech mode. Open the downloaded StoryRoom EPUB in Moon+ Reader and select its read-aloud option.
Use @Voice Aloud Reader
@Voice Aloud Reader can also read EPUB files aloud. Open the downloaded EPUB in the app to listen with your device’s text-to-speech voice.
Both apps use the voices installed on your Android device, so the narration may sound different on another phone or tablet.
Listen on Windows, macOS, or Linux
Thorium Reader and calibre can read EPUB files aloud on a computer.
Use Thorium Reader
Thorium Reader is free and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Open the downloaded EPUB and start the read-aloud feature.
Use calibre
calibre is a free desktop application. Open the StoryRoom EPUB in its e-book viewer and use the Read aloud feature.
These programs use your computer’s installed text-to-speech voices. The available voices determine how natural the narration sounds.
Listen offline
Download the EPUB before going offline and check that it opens in your chosen reader. You can then open the saved file without returning to the StoryRoom page.
If the author adds new chapters, download the story again. WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an existing EPUB.
You can also move the downloaded book to another reading device. See the guides to send StoryRoom stories to Kindle or read StoryRoom stories on Kobo.
