Put FictionAlley Stories on Kindle With Calibre
To put a FictionAlley Archive story on a Kindle over USB, download the story as an EPUB with WP Downloader and add it to calibre. You can then convert it to AZW3 and use calibre’s Send to device command to copy it to your Kindle.
What you need
Have these ready:
- The FictionAlley Archive story page
- A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux
- calibre, the free e-book manager
- Your Kindle and its USB cable
WP Downloader is a free web tool, so you do not need to install anything for the download. You also do not need to sign in to FictionAlley Archive.
Step 1: Copy the FictionAlley story link
Open the story on fictionalley-archive.org or fictionalley.org and copy the URL from your browser’s address bar. A story link looks like this:
https://www.fictionalley-archive.org/authors/drt/DA.html Copy the story page rather than a chapter or list. WP Downloader downloads complete FictionAlley Archive stories, not individual chapters or lists.
Step 2: Download the story with WP Downloader
Open the FictionAlley downloader, then paste the story link into the box. WP Downloader will detect the site and prepare the story.
Choose EPUB, which is free for everyone, and decide whether to include the story’s images. PDF is also available with a free Discord sign-in, but you will need the EPUB for the AZW3 conversion described here.
Save the finished EPUB to your computer. The FictionAlley download guide covers this process in more detail.
Step 3: Add the EPUB to calibre
Open calibre and select Add books. Find the downloaded EPUB and add it to your calibre library.
You can edit the story’s metadata or cover in calibre before converting it. This is optional, so you can also leave the book as downloaded.
Step 4: Convert the EPUB to AZW3
Select the FictionAlley story in calibre and choose Convert books. Set the output format to AZW3, then start the conversion.
AZW3 is a Kindle format that can be copied to the device over USB. calibre can also convert EPUB files to MOBI or PDF.
Amazon’s Send to Kindle service no longer accepts MOBI, but Kindle e-readers can still open MOBI and AZW3 files copied over USB. This method transfers the AZW3 file directly from your computer, so it does not use the Send to Kindle service.
Step 5: Connect the Kindle by USB
Connect your Kindle to the computer with its USB cable and wait for calibre to recognize it.
Select the converted story in your calibre library, then choose Send to device. calibre will copy the book to the connected Kindle.
When the transfer is finished, disconnect the Kindle. You can then open the FictionAlley story on the device and read it offline.
Other ways to read the story
Using USB lets calibre handle the conversion and transfer while keeping both the original EPUB and the converted AZW3 in your library.
If you prefer not to connect the Kindle to a computer, see the guide to send a FictionAlley story to Kindle.
You can also open the EPUB in calibre’s e-book viewer, which has a Read aloud feature. If you use a different e-reader, follow the guide to read FictionAlley stories on Kobo.
