How to Put a MediaMiner Story on a Kindle with calibre

You can put a MediaMiner story on a Kindle without using Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Download the complete story as an EPUB with WP Downloader, convert it to AZW3 in calibre, then transfer it to your Kindle over USB.

What you need

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • The MediaMiner story link
  • A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux
  • calibre installed on the computer
  • A USB connection for your Kindle

WP Downloader is a free web tool, so there is nothing to install. You do not need a MediaMiner account.

Step 1: Copy the MediaMiner story link

Open the story on mediaminer.org and copy the URL from your browser’s address bar. A MediaMiner story link looks like this:

https://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/s/category-name/story-title/123456

Copy the main story link. WP Downloader supports complete MediaMiner stories, not individual chapters or lists.

Step 2: Download the story with WP Downloader

Open the MediaMiner downloader and paste the link into the box. WP Downloader recognizes the MediaMiner link and prepares the whole story for download.

Choose EPUB as the output format. EPUB downloads are free for everyone, and you can choose whether to include the story’s images.

WP Downloader does not create MOBI or AZW3 files. calibre can convert the EPUB to AZW3 before you transfer it to your Kindle.

For more help with downloading the EPUB, read how to download MediaMiner stories.

Step 3: Add the EPUB to calibre

Open calibre and select Add books. Find the EPUB you downloaded and add it to your calibre library.

You can edit the book’s metadata and cover before transferring it, or continue to the conversion if you do not want to make any changes.

To check the book first, open it in calibre’s e-book viewer. The viewer also has a Read aloud feature for listening on your computer.

Step 4: Convert the EPUB to AZW3

Select the MediaMiner story in calibre and start a book conversion. Set EPUB as the input format and AZW3 as the output format.

AZW3 is a Kindle format that you can transfer directly over USB. calibre can also convert EPUB files to MOBI or PDF, but this guide uses AZW3.

Complete the conversion and wait for calibre to create the AZW3 file. calibre will also keep the original EPUB in your library.

Step 5: Connect the Kindle over USB

Connect your Kindle e-reader to your computer. When calibre recognizes it, select the converted story and choose Send to device.

calibre will copy the Kindle-compatible version to the device over USB. Once the transfer finishes, you can read the story offline on your Kindle.

This method is for Kindle e-readers connected to a computer. To use Amazon’s delivery service instead, follow the guide to send MediaMiner stories to Kindle.

Why use calibre instead of Send to Kindle?

With calibre, you can keep the EPUB in your library, convert it, and transfer it over a wired connection.

Amazon’s Send to Kindle service no longer accepts MOBI files, but Kindle e-readers still open MOBI and AZW3 files copied over USB. WP Downloader provides the EPUB, and calibre converts it to AZW3.

If the story gets new chapters, download the whole story again with WP Downloader. The tool does not update an EPUB you previously downloaded.
