How to Read FictionAlley Stories Offline on a Flight

Download your FictionAlley Archive story while you still have internet access. Once the EPUB or PDF is saved on your phone, tablet, e-reader, or laptop, you can read it during the flight without Wi-Fi.

Download the FictionAlley story before your flight

WP Downloader is a free web tool with nothing to install. Go to the FictionAlley downloader page to get started.

  1. Open the FictionAlley Archive story you want to read.
  2. Copy its URL from your browser. It should look similar to this:
https://www.fictionalley-archive.org/authors/drt/DA.html
  1. Paste the URL into WP Downloader.
  2. Choose EPUB or PDF. EPUB is free for everyone, while PDF requires a free Discord sign-in.
  3. Choose whether to include the story’s images.
  4. Download the finished file to the device you are taking on the flight.

You do not need to sign in to FictionAlley. WP Downloader downloads the entire story from FictionAlley Archive, not individual chapters or story lists. For a broader walkthrough, see how to download FictionAlley stories.

WP Downloader’s support for FictionAlley Archive and its other additional fiction archives was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.

Choose EPUB or PDF

EPUB works well if you want to read the story as an ebook. You can open it in an EPUB reading app on your phone, tablet, or computer, or send it to Kindle before your trip.

Choose PDF if you plan to use a PDF viewer. Amazon’s Send to Kindle service also accepts PDF files.

WP Downloader does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files. Kindle users do not need a MOBI file because Send to Kindle accepts EPUB and PDF and no longer accepts MOBI.

Prepare the story on your device

After downloading the file, open it in the app or on the device you plan to use during the flight.

Phone or tablet

Download the EPUB or PDF directly to your phone or tablet, then open it in an app that supports the format.

Use an EPUB reading app for EPUB or a PDF viewer for PDF. Check that the complete story opens before you turn on airplane mode. A file stored on the device does not need an internet connection to open.

Kindle e-reader or Kindle app

Use Amazon’s Send to Kindle service while you still have internet access. You can send the EPUB or PDF by email to your Kindle’s Send-to-Kindle address, through the Send to Kindle app, or on the web.

Amazon converts the EPUB and adds the book to your Kindle library. The book can then appear on Kindle e-readers and in the Kindle app. When sending a file by email, you must use an approved sender email address for your Kindle account.

Send to Kindle needs an internet connection to deliver the file. Send it before your flight and check that it appears and opens on the Kindle or in the Kindle app you are taking. The FictionAlley Kindle guide explains the full process.

Kobo

Download the FictionAlley story as an EPUB and transfer it to your Kobo before the trip. Open the book once to check that it is ready before you lose your connection. See the FictionAlley Kobo guide for device-specific instructions.

Laptop

Save the EPUB or PDF to your laptop instead of leaving it in a browser or online location. Before departure, open the downloaded file with an EPUB reader or PDF viewer to check that the app can read it.

Test everything in airplane mode

Test the story offline before you leave:

  1. Confirm that the file has finished downloading or transferring.
  2. Open the story on the device and in the app you plan to use.
  3. Turn on airplane mode.
  4. Close and reopen the story.
  5. Move between a few parts of the book to confirm that they remain available.

If the story does not reopen, turn your connection back on and finish downloading, transferring, or delivering the file before you leave.

If FictionAlley adds new chapters later, download the whole story again. WP Downloader cannot update an existing EPUB with new chapters.
