How to Read MediaMiner Stories Offline on a Flight
To read a MediaMiner story during a flight without Wi-Fi, download it before you leave. Save the EPUB or PDF on the device you are taking and check that it opens in airplane mode.
Download the MediaMiner story
The free MediaMiner downloader from WP Downloader works in your browser, with nothing to install.
- Find the story on mediaminer.org.
- Copy its URL from your browser.
- Paste the URL into WP Downloader.
- Choose EPUB or PDF.
- Choose whether to include the story’s images.
- Download the file while you still have internet access.
A MediaMiner story link looks like this:
https://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/s/category-name/story-title/123456 You do not need to sign in to MediaMiner. For this site, WP Downloader downloads the whole story. It cannot download a single chapter or a list of stories.
EPUB is free for everyone. PDF requires a free Discord sign-in. The MediaMiner download guide has a longer walkthrough.
WP Downloader’s support for MediaMiner and its other fiction archives was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader.
Pick a device and reading app
Choose a setup that works with the device you are taking on the flight.
Phone or tablet
Download the EPUB to your phone or tablet, then open it in an EPUB reader while you still have an internet connection.
You can also download a PDF and open it in a PDF reader. In either case, make sure the file is saved on the device and is not available only through a web page or an online location.
Kindle app or Kindle e-reader
Download the story as EPUB or PDF, then send it to Kindle before the flight. Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts both formats.
You can send the file:
- By emailing it to your Kindle’s Send-to-Kindle address
- Through the Send to Kindle app
- Through Send to Kindle on the web
Amazon converts EPUB files during delivery. The book then appears in your Kindle library on Kindle e-readers and in the Kindle app.
Delivery requires an internet connection, so finish this step before boarding. If you use email, send the file from an approved sender email address. Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI files.
Follow the MediaMiner Kindle guide for detailed steps.
Kobo
Download the MediaMiner story and move it to the Kobo you plan to use. Open the book before you travel to make sure the transfer worked.
See the MediaMiner Kobo guide for more details.
Laptop
You can keep the EPUB or PDF on a laptop as well. Open it with an app that supports the format and make sure the file is stored locally before you leave.
Test the story in airplane mode
Check that the story works offline before your trip:
- Open the downloaded story in your reading app.
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Close the story and open it again.
- Move through a few sections or chapters.
- Check that any included images appear.
If the story does not reopen, turn off airplane mode and confirm that the file was downloaded to the device. Kindle users should also check that delivery and conversion have finished.
If you downloaded the story on one device and plan to read on another, check the second device. The file must be stored on the device you take onto the plane.
Preflight checklist
Before you leave, check that:
- The whole story opens in your reading app
- The file is on your phone, tablet, Kindle, Kobo, or laptop
- The story opens with airplane mode on
- Kindle delivery is complete, if you used Send to Kindle
- The story’s images are included if you want them
- You have downloaded the latest copy you need
WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an existing EPUB. If the MediaMiner story has been updated, download the whole story again before your flight.
