How to Read MediaMiner Stories on a Barnes & Noble NOOK

To read a MediaMiner story on a Barnes & Noble NOOK, download it as an EPUB with WP Downloader and copy the file to your device over USB. Barnes & Noble calls this “sideloading.” WP Downloader is a free web tool, so you do not need to install anything.

What you need

You will need:

  • The MediaMiner story page
  • A computer with access to WP Downloader
  • Your NOOK and its USB cable

WP Downloader supports English-language stories from mediaminer.org. You do not need to sign in to MediaMiner.

A story URL looks like this:

https://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/s/category-name/story-title/123456

Use the URL for the whole story. WP Downloader downloads complete MediaMiner stories, not individual chapters or lists.

Step 1: Download the MediaMiner story as an EPUB

Open the MediaMiner downloader in your browser. You can also paste the story link into the box on the WP Downloader home page, which will detect that the link comes from MediaMiner.

Copy the story URL from your browser’s address bar and paste it into WP Downloader. Start the download and choose EPUB as the output format. EPUB is free for everyone and works on NOOK devices.

WP Downloader also offers PDF after a free Discord sign-in. It does not create MOBI, AZW3, or TXT files.

Select the option to include the story’s images if you want them in the EPUB. When the book is ready, save it somewhere you can find easily on your computer.

For more detail, see How to download MediaMiner stories.

Step 2: Connect your NOOK to the computer

Connect your NOOK GlowLight to the computer with its USB cable.

On some models, the device appears as a drive named “NOOK.” Open that drive to access its storage.

Newer models may require you to change the USB setting:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the NOOK screen.
  2. Tap “USB for charging.”
  3. Choose “Transfer files (MTP).”

The NOOK storage should then appear on your computer.

Step 3: Copy the EPUB to your NOOK

Find the MediaMiner EPUB you downloaded and drag it onto the NOOK drive. Wait for the transfer to finish.

Eject the NOOK using your computer’s normal eject option before unplugging the USB cable. You can then open the EPUB on your NOOK and read it offline.

Getting new chapters later

WP Downloader cannot add new chapters to an EPUB you already have. If the author updates the story, paste its MediaMiner link into WP Downloader again and download a new copy of the complete story.

Copy the new EPUB to your NOOK using the same USB steps. If you keep both versions on the device, open the newer copy for the latest available chapters.

Other ways to read MediaMiner stories

The transfer steps differ between e-readers. See the guides for sending MediaMiner stories to Kindle or reading MediaMiner stories on Kobo.

Support for MediaMiner and the other fiction archives in WP Downloader was ported from FanFicFare, the open-source fanfiction downloader licensed under Apache-2.0.
